If you've spent more than a week researching Shopify upgrade paths, you've already heard the pitch: "Plus unlocks enterprise features." It's true. It's also unhelpful. The actual question is whether your brand needs those features today, will need them in 12 months, or will never need them at all.
We've migrated 40+ brands to Shopify Plus and we've also told 30+ brands not to upgrade yet. Here's the decision framework we use.
The three honest reasons to upgrade to Shopify Plus
Shopify Plus costs roughly $2,500/month versus $400/month for Advanced Shopify. Plus also takes a percentage of GMV on Shopify Payments. For most brands the line item question isn't "can we afford it". It's "are we getting value for it."
The three honest reasons we recommend Plus:
- Checkout customization beyond what Online Store 2.0 allows. Custom checkout fields, post-purchase upsells, server-side validations, Shopify Functions for discounts/shipping/payments. These are Plus-only territory in 2026.
- B2B + DTC on the same organization. Shopify B2B is genuinely good now, but it's gated to Plus. If you want to serve wholesale buyers and consumers from the same store with separate catalogs, pricing rules, and checkouts. Plus is the answer.
- Multi-region with Markets Pro. If you're selling in three or more markets with localized pricing, languages, currencies, and tax. Markets Pro on Plus is meaningfully better than stitching together expansion stores on Advanced.
The features that don't justify Plus on their own
People upgrade for these but probably shouldn't:
- Shopify Flow. Powerful, but if you're a sub-$5M brand you can replicate 80% of Flow with a $30/month app. Wait.
- Multiple expansion stores. Each adds complexity. Most brands are better off mastering one region first.
- Higher API limits. Real, but only matters once you have integrations actively hitting throttle ceilings. Most brands don't.
- "Enterprise support." Useful, but doesn't replace a good agency. If you have one, you'll use Shopify support twice a year.
The honest test: list the three features you're upgrading for. If two of them are nice-to-have, wait six months.
When you definitely should upgrade
Some signs you're past the point of debating:
- You're doing $1M+ in monthly GMV and your checkout limitations are costing you real revenue.
- You have B2B buyers and consumers using the same store today, with hacks.
- You operate in three or more regions and your current Markets setup is creaking.
- You need Shopify Functions for a real custom discount or shipping rule.
- You're hitting API throttle on your integration stack.
When you should stay on Advanced
- Under $1M annual GMV with a single market and single channel.
- No B2B motion or pure-DTC with no plans for wholesale.
- Standard checkout works fine. You don't need post-purchase upsells, custom fields, or Functions.
- You're growing fast but not yet hitting any of the bottlenecks above.
The 60-second test
Ask yourself: "If we upgrade tomorrow, what's the first thing we ship that we can't ship today?" If the answer is concrete and revenue-tied, upgrade. If it's vague ("we'll be able to scale better"), wait.
Cost math: when Plus pays for itself
Plus typically pays for itself when you can credit at least 1.5% incremental revenue lift directly to a Plus-only feature. For a $5M ARR brand, that's $75K/year: meaningfully more than the Plus price tag of roughly $30K/year. For a $1M brand, you'd need closer to 3% incremental lift, which is harder to point at a single feature.
What we'd do if we were you
If you're between $1M and $3M GMV and considering Plus, our default advice is: upgrade if you have a specific B2B opportunity, a specific checkout limitation that's costing real money, or a multi-region expansion in the next 6 months. Otherwise: invest the $30K in CRO, paid acquisition, or a custom theme rebuild on Advanced. You'll get more out of it.
And if you're past $5M GMV and still on Advanced. You're probably leaving Plus features (and money) on the table. Get an architecture review.
